Ready to volunteer?
Being a squirrel parent is hard work! Before you volunteer, please take the following into consideration:
- Raising babies can be a full time job – young babies drink milk every 3 to 4 hours!
- The average cost to raise a baby from 4 weeks to release is approximately R1000 per squirrel – at this stage our volunteers pay for what they need to raise the squirrels in their care.
- Squirrels can be messy! You will wash ALOT of blankets and clean ALOT of cages while raising squirrels.
- Raising squirrels can be heartbreaking. Sadly we can’t rescue all the squirrels in our care. Sometimes babies are born with defects, or a squirrel will need to be put down due to its injuries.
- Raising babies are not the only way you can help! We are also looking for sites to release squirrels, people who can transport babies between homes and people who are willing to help with fundraising and marketing.
Becoming involved with rescue and raising squirrels are also extremely rewarding. We will provide you with training and you will be supported by individuals who have years of experience in rescue and rehabilitation of wildlife. Read our Squirrel Rescue Constitution and complete our volunteer form on the righthand side.
